Kamloops – The Kamloops & District Chamber of Commerce is deeply disappointed by the announcement of new 25% tariffs by President Donald Trump. Recognizing the Feb 3rd announcement of these tariffs being delayed by 30 days to allow for more discussion means more time for the Canadian Government, business community and Chamber of Commerce network to emphasize the point that these tariffs do not make sense between our two countries.
These tariffs pose significant challenges for our local businesses and will have far-reaching effects on our regional, provincial, and national economy.
“While many of our members are not trade-exposed, the tariffs proposed will have impacts for our members and our regional business community. As a Chamber, we have long championed the importance of supporting local businesses, and now more than ever, this commitment is essential.” Acacia Pangilinan, Executive Director of the Kamloops & District Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber network has consistently advocated for reducing barriers to interprovincial trade, recognizing that a strong and interconnected economy benefits businesses across Canada. In light of these new trade challenges, it is crucial to address these barriers head-on and work collaboratively with government and industry partners to mitigate the economic impact on businesses in Kamloops and beyond.
To support its members the Kamloops Chamber will be:
- Asking businesses to fill out the survey found here to collect information
- Meeting with elected officials to share impacts
- Hosting a business town hall (February 12) for business community to ask questions and discuss solutions: Register here!
- Providing resources to help businesses navigate these tariffs
- Advocate through the Chamber network and with elected officials to address what could be devastating for our economy and Canadians
